Printing Suggestions

Family Tree Prints helps you create a beautiful, custom family tree! While we don't do the printing, if you're interested in taking your high-resolution digital download and getting it printed and framed, we have some recommendations for you.

We highly recommend matte paper.

In our experience printing on glossy or lustre photo paper can have a tiny bit of bleed (although this is rarely noticeable until you’re up close) and printing on canvas can severely impact readability and lower resolution.

Since each chart is uniquely customized, it would be impossible for us to able to account for each unique circumstance, but below are some good rules of thumb. Below are our recommended print sizes. We provide them with the caveat that we’ve had customers print gorgeous charts smaller than the recommended print sizes--please consider your font size, and the contrast of your text and cell color when printing! (The smaller you choose to print your chart, the larger you’ll want your font sizes and the higher contrast your colors!) Your digital download can be printed as large as 36" x 24" without loss of clarity.

Circle Charts:

 - 6 generations: 12” x 12”

Real-life sizes our customers have printed their 6 generation circle charts and loved them? 11” x 14”, 12” x 12” and 20” x 20”--for the smaller print sizes be sure to watch your fonts sizes and contrast!

 - 8 generations: 20” x 20”

Fan Charts:

 - 6 generations: 16” x 20”

Real-life sizes our customers have also printed 11” x 14” and been happy--just watch your font sizes and contrast!

 - 8 generations: 20” x 30”

Themed Shape Charts:

These charts are limited to 4-5 generations, and 11” x 14” tends to be a good size for these. You can also get away with 8” x 10”.

Local print shops are a great way to go if you have one, but there are some great online options as well. Here are a few to consider.

Highest Quality: Artifact Uprising

Try Artifact Uprising if you're looking for a giclee print on archival fine art paper. They also have framing options available, so you can get everything taken care of at once!

Price point for comparison: 16" x 20" print ($39)

High Quality: Mpix

Mpix offers a variety of options, including poster and metal prints, as well as a variety of framing options. Their basic photo print is done on archival quality photo paper.

Price point for comparison: 16" x 20" print ($20.39)

Cost efficient: Costco (Walmart, Sam's Club, etc.)

If you're looking for a cheap way to print, Costco or your local equivalent is a great option. Anecdotally, Costco and Sam’s Club seem to have higher quality than Walmart.

Price point for comparison: 16" x 20" print ($3.99 Costco)

We’d recommend NOT doing this. Many image editors will import your genealogy chart file at a lower resolution, so after you’ve made changes and re-exported the quality of the file may be compromised. Family Tree Prints is NOT responsible for the print quality of a file that you have altered.
