Family Tree Maker: How to Add a Text Decal

Family Tree Maker: How to Add a Text Decal

Family trees can look great with or without a text decal, so it's purely a matter of preference whether you include one or not. If you want to add one, here's how.

To start with click the "Text Decal" icon in the left sidebar to open the text decal sidebar panel. Once in the panel, you can add whatever heading and/or subheading text you like by typing in their respective text boxes in the panel. Changes are updated in real time.

Font, font size, spacing, and color are controlled independently between the heading and the subheading, so you can customize any way you'd like without being unduly constrained. to change the font color, simply click on the color swatch and either use the color picker or enter a Hex or RGB value.

To change the font size or margin (space between the heading or subheading and the chart), simply click and drag the corresponding slider. Font is chosen using the drop-down menu under heading or subheading respectively.

There are lots of different options for what text to actually use as your text decal. Some classic options include "The [Your Last Name] Family", "Genealogy", "My Family Tree", "Family", or "Ancestors". For more suggestions, check out this blog post.

Family Tree Maker: How to Change Number of Generations

Family Tree Maker: How to Change Number of Generations

Depending on how large you'd like to physically print your chart, how many generations of genealogy you have completed, etc. you may want to change the number of generations displayed on your chart.

Changing the number of generations displayed in your chart is easy. Here's how:

First, click on the Chart tab in the left sidebar. This will open the chart sidebar panel. Then simply slide the Generations slider to your desired number of generations.

A FEW NOTES:

  • If you have already imported data from either FamilySearch and wish to INCREASE the number of generations of data displayed, you will need to reimport your data as our family tree maker only imports the number of generations displayed currently to save time and storage space. To do so, simply go to the "Import" tab on the left sidebar, click "Clear All Cell Data" at the bottom of that panel, and then import again as normal.
  • Changing the number of generations displayed in your chart may change the price of your final chart download. 3-5 generations are the same price, 6-8 generations are the same price and 9-10 generations are the same price.

Here's a little video showing this feature in action.

Family Tree Maker: How To Change Date Format

Family Tree Maker: How To Change Date Format

There are several different ways to display date information and how you'd like it displayed on each generation of your chart is up to you. Here are the different options and how to switch between them.

1) To start, click the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar, and then the "Generation" tab to open the Generation sidebar panel.

2) Then choose for which generation you would like to modify how dates are displayed, either by clicking on the generation in your chart of by selecting it from the drop-down menu.

3) Then click the "Information Displayed" drop-down menu and choose how you would like your date to be formatted.

Examples of each option are given below.

You may need to modify the generation radius (a.k.a. how "long" each cell is as measured from the center), as well as the font size to make long names fit.  You may also find Text Offset useful if you find that it looks like the name is in the wrong place in the cell.

Here's a little video showing this feature in action--this video was made using the old editor, but all of the functionality is the same--you just access the generations panel differently!

Family Tree Maker: How to Import using a GEDCOM file

Family Tree Maker: How to Import using a GEDCOM file

The ability to directly import up to 10 generations of genealogy using a GEDCOM file (or via FamilySearch) has got to be one of my favorite time-saving features of Family Tree Prints. If you've read about the impetus for our creating Family Tree Prints (a.k.a. spending 40+ hours meticulous creating a family tree chart for my mother-in-law by hand) you'll know why. The best part? It's super easy. Here's how.

Choose whichever template you'd like to start from on www.familytreeprints.com, and click "Start from this template". This will drop you into the family tree maker software.

1) In the top right-hand corner, click the grey button that says "Import Family Names".Alternatively, you can click the Import icon at the bottom of the left sidebar. Both options will open the Import sidebar panel.

2) Click "Import Gedcom File" and select the file you'd like to import from your computer.

Family Tree Maker: How To Change Colors in Your Family Tree Chart

Family Tree Maker: How To Change Colors in Your Family Tree Chart

Personalization is a key component of Family Tree Prints. You should be able to create a family tree chart that fits your personality and style and matches your home decor... which means you should be able to create a chart that doesn't look like a muted rainbow if you want. With Family Tree Prints it's easy. Here's how.

CHANGE COLOR PALETTE

By far the easiest and most fun way to change colors is to switch color palettes. Presumably you've already chosen a template you like from FamilyTreePrints.com to get you started, but that doesn't mean you're locked in.

To start with click the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar, followed by the "Palette" icon in the advanced settings.

change pedigree chart color

This will show you a preview of your current shape in a variety of color palettes--scroll up and down to see all palette options. The palettes are divided into categories (Solid Color, Double Dark Chroma, Creamy Rings, etc.) and the preview shows only one color scheme in each category at a time.

different color choices for your family tree print

To preview a different color scheme with the category, simply click one of the colored squares directly beneath the category name. If a single square has 2 or more colors in it, clicking the square multiple times will show you different arrangements of those colors (for example purple stripe then yellow stripe vs. yellow stripe then purple stripe).

Click the preview image to change the color scheme of your chart.

Here's a little video showing changing palette color options. This video was created using the older version of the family tree maker app, but all the functionality is the same--the only difference is that you have to click the "Advanced" tab first to access the Palette tab.

CHANGE LINE COLOR

Another way to customize your chart color is to change the line color. To do this, click the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar of the family tree maker app, then the "Color" tab. Click the color swatch directly under "Line Color"

change line color step 1

This will pull up a color picker, from which you can choose from any of the color swatches that are part of the current color palette or any other color using the color chooser.

Alternatively, you can change the line color from the "Chart" tab within the advanced settings, also by clicking the color swatch underneath the "Line Color" heading.

CHANGE INDIVIDUAL CELL COLOR:

If that's not enough customization for you, you can also change each individual cell color.

Click the "Advanced" tab, followed by the "Color" tab within the advanced settings. From here, click on the cell in the actual chart whose color you would like to modify, then click the color swatch under the "Background Color" heading.

This will pull up a color picker from which you can choose from any of the color swatches that are part of the current palette, or any other color you'd like using the color picker.

You can change the individual cell text color in a similar way by clicking the color swatch under the heading "Text Color".

Family Tree Maker: How To Edit an Individual Cell

Family Tree Maker: How To Edit an Individual Cell

Whether you just need to fix or edit something that was imported from FamilySearch or via GEDCOM file, or if you'd like to create your full chart manually knowing how to edit the text in an individual cell comes in handy. You can also change the text and background color for each cell. Here's how.

Click the "Chart" icon in the left sidebar.

edit information for ancestor

Next, click on the cell you'd like to edit in the chart. It will pull up the information currently stored in the cell in the sidebar panel. From here, you can edit the individual's name, birth and death dates (you can choose to just have the years, or enter full Day Month Year dates) by simply editing the text in each field in the sidebar.

Alternatively, you can also edit an individual cell by clicking the "Advanced" tab, followed by the "Individual" tab in the advanced settings. Changing an individual's name and date information works identically to as described above. Additionally, to change either background or text color for an individual cell, just click on the color swatch and either enter a HEX value or use the color picker.

You can also choose to flip or invert the text (this comes in handy for round charts!).

Family Tree Maker: How to Import from FamilySearch

Family Tree Maker: How to Import from FamilySearch

The ability to directly import up to 10 generations of genealogy within minutes from FamilySearch has got to be one of my favorite time-saving features of Family Tree Prints.

In the top right-hand corner, click the grey button that says "Import Family Names". Alternatively, you can click the Import icon at the bottom of the left sidebar. Both options will open the Import sidebar panel.

import ancestors via FamilySearch

From here, choose click "Sign In To Family Search".

sign in to FamilySearch

This will open up the login page for FamilySearch.com in another tab of your browser. Sign in using your FamilySearch credentials. Once you do so, you will be automatically redirected back to Family Tree Prints.

familysearch login

From here there are three different options.

import ancestors from FamilySearch step 4

Option A) allows you to choose from a drop-down who you would like to be the "center" of your chart. If you are married and have connected to your spouse in Family Search, it will give you the option of choosing yourself, your spouse, or "A child of [yours]". Once you have chosen who you would like as the center of your chart, click "Import Ancestors".

Option B) allows you to enter any FamilySearch ID of a deceased person and place that person as the "center" of your chart. Once you have entered the ID, click "Import Ancestors". For where the ID is located in FamilySearch, see below.

finding FamilySearch ID

Option C) works much the same as option B, except that you provide FamilySearch IDs for the mother and father of the person you would like at the center (who you can input manually). This may work well for families with multiple/split parents, etc.

Once you click "Import Ancestors" it will take between 30 seconds and 3 minutes to import your ancestors, depending on how many generations you are downloading.

final import using FamilySearch

Troubleshooting tips:

  • Importing does not change the name at the very center of the chart (by default "The Kimitri Family"). Change this name by clicking "Chart" in the left sidebar and then clicking on the cell you'd like to edit in the actual chart. You can then edit the text under the Name: field.chart edit
  • If you import via Option A) and it appears that none of your spouse's ancestors have imported, it is probably because you have not fully connected with their ancestors on FamilySearch. You need to log into your FamilySearch account and put in "placeholder" cards for your spouse and all of their living ancestors (parents, grandparents, etc.) For more information on how to do that, check out this tutorial--the entire process takes less than 10 minutes!
  • If you want to change who is at the center of your chart, click the green Clear All Cell Data at the bottom of the Import sidebar panel, then re-import as desired.
  • If you feel like you've updated so many times it's in a snarl, try refreshing the page. That works wonders!
