A Guide to Printing Circle Family Tree Charts At Costco

A Guide to Printing Circle Family Tree Charts At Costco

Printing a fan chart with Costco should be easy peasy and work exactly as you imagine it will--upload your photo, pick your size, choose landscape and wiggle it around to make sure your margins look good if necessary. Printing a circle chart with Costco is a completely different beast altogether. In fact, you can't use your file downloaded directly from Family Tree Prints to do it (unless you want a teeny tiny little circle) because of the way Costco's online cropper works, but don't worry, we can help you!

If you upload your square file to do a Costco print online, it will cut off the edges of your circle, like this.

costco family tree circle print

The first time I personally tried to print at Costco, I looked EVERYWHERE for a "Fit to Canvas" type of setting... but nothing. It would cut off the sides no matter what I tried. But don't panic. Just shoot us an email (hello@familytreeprints.com) with the email address you checked out under and the size you're looking to print and we'll manually reformat it for you so that it fits perfectly, as shown below.

One thing to note before doing it yourself (which, in general, we're huge fans of!) is that a lot of image manipulation software automatically decreases the resolution on really high-resolution files (like our Family Tree Prints!) without telling you. This will cause your final chart to be blurry, which no one wants. A good rule of thumb is to ensure at the end that you have AT LEAST 300 px per inch.

For example, if you want to print a 20" x 30" poster, you'll need to make sure that the image you upload to Costco is at least 6000 x 9000 px (more is even better!) On a Mac, you can check this by right-clicking on the image in your Finder window, and choosing "Get Info".

checking high resolution

The "Dimensions" will tell you the pixel dimensions of your image. Divide each number by 300 and you'll know the maximum size you can print!

checking high resolution step 2

As far as which image manipulation software to use... we use Sketch. It doesn't automatically shrink your file size, which is a major win! All this computer talk making your head hurt? Want us to just take care of it for you? Perfect! Send us an email to hello@familytreeprints.com with the email you checked out under and the size you'd like to print!

Family Tree Maker Troubleshooting: My Chart Is Taking Forever To "Prepare"

Family Tree Maker Troubleshooting: My Chart Is Taking Forever To

Once you're clicked the "Order My Chart" button, a window will pop up saying: "Nice job! One moment while we do a little behind-the-scenes magic to get your chart ready for your cart."

preparing your chart

There's a progress bar, which should should you the progress the family tree maker is making in preparing your pedigree chart for download. Once it reaches 100% the window will change to show a button saying "View Cart". Your chart shouldn't take any longer than 5 minutes to prepare once you click the "Order My Chart" button.

order your chart form our family tree maker

How long the chart takes to prepare depends primarily on 1) the number of generations your chart has, 2) the internet browser you're using, and 3) how powerful your computer is. If the progress bar stalls, here's a couple things to try:

  • Do a "smart refresh" of the page and try again. This means that BEFORE REFRESHING (this is important!), remove all the "junk" at the end of the URL so the only part remaining is https://app.familytreeprints.com. For example, if your current URL is https://app.familytreeprints.com/?productId=7461591941&productHandle=amathest-circle-family-tree-chart-37&generations=3-5&quantity=1 you would remove every after and including the "?". If you just refresh the page before clearing the junk at the end of the URL, the template will reset to it's original state and remove any formatting changes you've made. Once you've refreshed the page, click Order My Chart again.
  • If you're using a browser other than Google Chrome, switch to Google Chrome, and try again. This is particularly important if you are doing a 9 or 10 generation chart. If you've made a lot of manual adjustments to your chart (you'll have to recreate it when you switch browsers) you can also try decreasing the number of generations displayed in your chart (on the Chart tab in the left sidebar of the family tree maker app) and try again.

If neither of these fixes work and you're still experiencing difficulty, let us know via the live chat feature (bottom right-hand corner of the family tree maker app screen) or send us an email to hello@familytreeprints.com. Family Tree Maker: How To Fix When Something Is In The Wrong Place

Family Tree Maker: How To Fix When Something Is In The Wrong Place

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes. You change a font, modify how information is displayed within a generation to either show or hide dates, or change the size of a cell... and suddenly the text seems to be in totally the wrong place. Don't panic--just try these quick fixes to make your pedigree chart picture perfect.

TEXT OFFSET

This is the most common culprit. Click the "Advanced" tab in the left side bar of the family tree maker app, then click the "Generations" tab within the Advanced settings. After choosing which generation you'd like to alter (either by clicking on the generation in the actual chart or choosing it from the drop-down menu), simply slide the "Text Offset" slider until the text is where you'd like it to be.

Family Tree Maker: How To Put Names On Fewer Lines

Family Tree Maker: How To Put Names On Fewer Lines

This is super easy! In the Family Tree Prints family tree maker app, if the name in any given cell is being displayed on more than one line, the app is recognizing the space between each name as a cue to go to the next line. Just replace the space between two parts of a name you'd like to remain on the same line with a ~ symbol. For example, if one of your ancestor's name is Peter Of Boveney Montague, it is probably currently being displayed as:

Peter
Of
Boveney
Montague

It would probably look much better as Peter~Of Boveney~Monague, which will appear as:

Peter Of
Boveney Montague.

To make this adjustment:

1. Staying on the main "Chart" tab, click on the cell in your chart you would like to edit. This will pull all the pertinent information into the sidebar panel of the family tree maker in an editable form.

2. Click on the text box displaying the name and add ~ symbols between names you would like to keep on the same line and voila!

Family Tree Maker: Tips for Making Long Names Fit

Family Tree Maker: Tips for Making Long Names Fit

If some of your ancestors have incredibly long names--Anna Katharina Elisabeth (Elise) Rauschenberg for example--there are a couple things you can do to help them fit in their allotted space. To make the chart most aesthetically pleasing normally requires employing several of these options in moderation rather than taking any one to an extreme. We normally make tweaks to a cell in the following order, but it's a matter of preference.

1. REMOVE NAME OPTIONS

Only you can be the judge of how far to take this one. If there are multiple name options (normally shown in parentheses), we like to start by making a determination of which name to use and removed the other one. In the situation where we're trying to shorten the name, unless you have a specific reason for choosing one of the other, we go for the shorter name.

To do this, simply stay on the main "Chart" tab in the sidebar, and then click on the cell you'd like to edit. This will pull up all of that individual's information in the sidebar panel.

edit individual's information in the family tree maker app

Then simply click in the text box showing the name and edit as normal.

2. CHANGE THE FONT SIZE

You can also do this from the main "Chart" tab in the left sidebar. Simply click on the cell you'd like to edit.

change font size in family tree maker app

Then simply drag the "Generation Font Size" slider until the name fits. If you're zoomed in, you'll be want to zoom back out to make sure that the font is readable and doesn't look comically small compared to the rest of your chart. Adjust as needed.

3. CHANGE THE WAY THE INFORMATION IS DISPLAYED

Click on the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar, then the "Generation" tab within the Advanced settings.

add or hide dates in family tree maker app

Click on the "Information Displayed" drop down and experiment with your options. Note: Some options display dates, some do not, and the change affects the entire generation.

add or hide date preferences in family tree maker app

ancestor's name on multiple lines

PRO TIP: For "Multiline" options, either vertical or horizontal it treats every space as the signal to go to a new line. If you want some parts of the name on the same line put a ~ rather than a space when editing the name in the Individual sidebar panel. See this tutorial for how to put names on fewer lines for more details.

4. CHANGE THE CELL SIZE

Still within the "Generation" sidebar panel, click and drag the "Radius" slider to change the cell size. You can also do this from the main "Chart" tab (NOT the "Chart" tab within advanced settings) by dragging the "Generation Width" slider bar.

change generation width in family tree maker app

5. REMOVE MIDDLE NAMES

This is just a more drastic form of (1) and works the same way.

removing portion of ancestor's name

Using a combination of these techniques you should be able to make any name fit perfectly while maintaining a beautiful chart aesthetic!
