Family Tree Maker: How To Add Names To The Center of Your Chart

Family Tree Maker: How To Add Names To The Center of Your Chart

If you're looking to add names to the center of your chart, this tutorial is for you!

Basically, once you're in our family tree maker, you'll want to make sure you're on the main "Chart" tab in the left sidebar. From there, just type the name(s) you'd like at the center of your chart in the "Name:____" field.

Most likely each part of the name (as determined by spaces) will be placed on its own separate line.

If you'd like the full name to be on the same line:

1. Click on the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar of the family tree maker.

2. Click on the "Generation" tab within the Advanced settings.

3. From here, just select "1st Generation" from the "Selected Generation" drop-down or click on the center generation in the chart itself.

4. Select Horizontal Straight from the "Information Displayed" drop-down.

To you'd like for the name to be split between lines, but not take up quite as many lines, on the main "Chart" tab where you've typed your name in, put a # rather than a space between the parts of the name you'd like to remain on the same line.

This video tutorial walks you through what that looks like.

Family Tree Maker: How To Use Two FamilySearch Accounts To Create One Family Tree Chart

Whether you're a couple that hasn't synced your accounts in FamilySearch, have a complex family makeup due to divorce, adoption, remarriage, etc., or are just looking to get creative with your family tree chart for a variety of reasons, this two-step import process will allow you to create one family tree chart using genealogy from two separate FamilySearch accounts. Here's how to do it.

1) Click "Import Family Names" in the top right-hand corner of the family tree maker app, or click "Import Names" in the left sidebar menu. Either will open the "Import Names" sidebar panel.

3) In a separate window, navigate to FamilySearch.org and sign in using the same credentials you just used. Find the FamilySearch ID for the person you would like to act as the "Father" or "Mother" in your Family Tree Prints chart.

log in to FamilySearch

4) Copy that ID and paste it on the appropriate line for either "Father" or "Mother" under "Option C) Provide Father and Mother IDs". This will fill in either the left- or right-hand side of your chart (leaving the center circle blank).

5) Delete the alphanumeric code you just used for either the father or the mother.  (This is important, otherwise when you do the next set it will delete all the data you'd already pulled in previously!) Click "Sign Out" at the bottom of the "Import Names" sidebar panel. DO NOT CLICK "Clear All Cell Data" (unless, of course, that's what you're hoping to accomplish).

6) Repeat steps 2-4 for the second account to fill in the missing "Father" or "Mother" line.

Voila! You have a gorgeous family tree chart made with genealogy from 2 FamilySearch accounts.
