Family Tree Maker: How To Add Names To The Center of Your Chart

Family Tree Maker: How To Add Names To The Center of Your Chart

If you're looking to add names to the center of your chart, this tutorial is for you!

Basically, once you're in our family tree maker, you'll want to make sure you're on the main "Chart" tab in the left sidebar. From there, just type the name(s) you'd like at the center of your chart in the "Name:____" field.

Most likely each part of the name (as determined by spaces) will be placed on its own separate line.

If you'd like the full name to be on the same line:

1. Click on the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar of the family tree maker.

2. Click on the "Generation" tab within the Advanced settings.

3. From here, just select "1st Generation" from the "Selected Generation" drop-down or click on the center generation in the chart itself.

4. Select Horizontal Straight from the "Information Displayed" drop-down.

To you'd like for the name to be split between lines, but not take up quite as many lines, on the main "Chart" tab where you've typed your name in, put a # rather than a space between the parts of the name you'd like to remain on the same line.

This video tutorial walks you through what that looks like.

Family Tree Maker: How To Use Two FamilySearch Accounts To Create One Family Tree Chart

Family Tree Maker: How To Use Two FamilySearch Accounts To Create One Family Tree Chart

Whether you're a couple that hasn't synced your accounts in FamilySearch, have a complex family makeup due to divorce, adoption, remarriage, etc., or are just looking to get creative with your family tree chart for a variety of reasons, this two-step import process will allow you to create one family tree chart using genealogy from two separate FamilySearch accounts. Here's how to do it.

1) Click "Import Family Names" in the top right-hand corner of the family tree maker app, or click "Import Names" in the left sidebar menu. Either will open the "Import Names" sidebar panel.

2) From here, click "Sign in to FamilySearch", and then enter the credentials for the first account you'd like to use. Once the credentials are authenticated, it will bring you back to our family tree maker app.

3) In a separate window, navigate to FamilySearch.org and sign in using the same credentials you just used. Find the FamilySearch ID for the person you would like to act as the "Father" or "Mother" in your Family Tree Prints chart.

log in to FamilySearch

4) Copy that ID and paste it on the appropriate line for either "Father" or "Mother" under "Option C) Provide Father and Mother IDs". This will fill in either the left- or right-hand side of your chart (leaving the center circle blank).

5) Delete the alphanumeric code you just used for either the father or the mother.  (This is important, otherwise when you do the next set it will delete all the data you'd already pulled in previously!) Click "Sign Out" at the bottom of the "Import Names" sidebar panel. DO NOT CLICK "Clear All Cell Data" (unless, of course, that's what you're hoping to accomplish).

6) Repeat steps 2-4 for the second account to fill in the missing "Father" or "Mother" line.

Voila! You have a gorgeous family tree chart made with genealogy from 2 FamilySearch accounts.

Family Tree Maker: How To Add An Ampersand To The Center Of Your Chart

Family Tree Maker: How To Add An Ampersand To The Center Of Your Chart

The most common shape that you'll want to add an ampersand (&) to the center of is the 360 Degree Horizontal circle. We have a little video tutorial below to show you exactly how to do this, but here is the rough idea:

1) Click on the "Advanced" tab in the left sidebar, then the "Generation" tab.

2) Select "1st Generation" from the drop-down menu. (Currently the first generation is hidden and the second generation is the first one that's visible, otherwise, you would be able to select the generation you'd like by click on that generation in the chart itself.)

3) Click on the "Individual" tab within the advanced settings and type & in the "Name:" field.

4) To increase the size of your ampersand, click back out to the main "Chart" tab (not in the advanced settings) and slide the "Generation Font Size" slider to the desired location.

We hope that this little tutorial helps you know how to create a family tree that's perfect for your family!

Family Tree Maker: How To Fix When Something Is In The Wrong Place

Family Tree Maker: How To Fix When Something Is In The Wrong Place

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes. You change a font, modify how information is displayed within a generation to either show or hide dates, or change the size of a cell... and suddenly the text seems to be in totally the wrong place. Don't panic--just try these quick fixes to make your pedigree chart picture perfect.

TEXT OFFSET

This is the most common culprit. Click the "Advanced" tab in the left side bar of the family tree maker app, then click the "Generations" tab within the Advanced settings. After choosing which generation you'd like to alter (either by clicking on the generation in the actual chart or choosing it from the drop-down menu), simply slide the "Text Offset" slider until the text is where you'd like it to be.

BEFORE REFRESHING (this is important!), remove all the "junk" at the end of the URL so the only part remaining is https://app.familytreeprints.com. For example, if your current URL is

https://app.familytreeprints.com/?productId=7461591941&productHandle=amathest-circle-family-tree-chart-37&generations=3-5&quantity=1

you would remove every after and including the "?".

Family Tree Maker: How To Put Names On Fewer Lines

Family Tree Maker: How To Put Names On Fewer Lines

This is super easy! In the Family Tree Prints family tree maker app, if the name in any given cell is being displayed on more than one line, the app is recognizing the space between each name as a cue to go to the next line. Just replace the space between two parts of a name you'd like to remain on the same line with a ~ symbol. For example, if one of your ancestor's name is Peter Of Boveney Montague, it is probably currently being displayed as:

Peter
Of
Boveney
Montague

It would probably look much better as Peter~Of Boveney~Monague, which will appear as:

Peter Of
Boveney Montague.

To make this adjustment:

1. Staying on the main "Chart" tab, click on the cell in your chart you would like to edit. This will pull all the pertinent information into the sidebar panel of the family tree maker in an editable form.

2. Click on the text box displaying the name and add ~ symbols between names you would like to keep on the same line and voila!
