Family. Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia on the thirteenth of April in 1743 to Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. He was the third of ten children. His father was a surveyor and cartographer. Thomas married Martha Wayles Skelton on January 1, 1772. They had six children, however, only two of them, Martha and Mary, made it to adulthood. After Martha's death, he fathered at least one child with one of his slaves, Sally Hemmings.

Virginia delegate to Continental Congress (1775), primary author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1776), Governor of Virginia (1779), Virginia delegate to the Congress of the Confederation (1783), US Minister to France (1785), US Secretary of State (1790), Vice President of the US (1797), President of the US (1801), Founder of the University of Virginia (1819).
